What is the National Register of Historic Places?
The
National Register is the official list of our nation’s cultural resources worthy
of preservation, and was authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act
of 1966.
The
list is maintained by the National Park Service. Properties listed in the
National Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects.
What are
the benefits of having a National
Historic Register District in Ridgway?
§
National
recognition that the district and its properties are significant to the Nation,
the State and the community. It is a prestigious honor to be listed!
§ Eligibility
for federal tax incentives (the existing 20% investment tax credit for
rehabilitation (exterior and interior) of income producing contributing
properties.
§ Helps our
downtown revitalization efforts. A historic district is a “draw” for visitors,
bringing more tourism dollars into our local economy. It will also improve our
abilities to win grants for economic development.
Are there any drawbacks to a National
Historic Register district?
NO!
Listing in the National Register does NOT interfere with a private
property owner’s right to alter, manage or dispose of the property. It does not
affect local zoning ordinances. A National Register District is NOT the same as
a Local Historic District (which can place restrictions on property owner’s).
We hope
to have the contributing property inventory available on our web site in the
future. Until that time, if you want to know if your house is identified as a
contributing property, please contact Dale Lauricella at (814)772-7657.
